About The College
By the early 1940s, Asansol was established as an importantindustrial belt, and thereafter arose the need to boosteducational facilities in the area. With such an objective inmind, Prof. Satyakali Mukherjee submitted a proposal toinaugurate a college for the first time in Asansol to the thenchairman of Asansol Municipality Mr. Jogendranath Roy,and the then S. D. O. Mr. Woodford, I.C.S. This nobleendeavor was supported by eminent personalities of the dayas well as the general populace, who donated generously tothe establishment of a higher educational institution.Owing to the initiative taken by Mr. G.S. Atwal, a businessluminary of the day, the institution came into being on 16thJuly 1944, with the strength of 132 students, enrolled in the I.A.class. Asansol College, as it came to be known, wasaffiliated with the University of Calcutta. It was originallysituated at Atwal Nagar (presently Budha Nagar, Asansol).Later, with a magnanimous donation from Late BanwarilalBhalotia, the present main building was constructed on anacquired land of 20 bighas. The foundation stone was laidby Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy. The newly-constructedcollege building (the present Old Building of the college)was inaugurated by the then Vice Chancellor of BurdwanUniversity, Sri S.K. Guha, and the college was renamedBanwarilal Bhalotia College.Presently affiliated with Kazi Nazrul University, B. B.College is one of the leading educational institutions inAsansol, providing both general and technology-basededucation. The college is blessed with a beautiful campus,spacious classrooms, well-equipped laboratories, adequatecomputer labs, well-stocked libraries, and a playground.Besides traditional undergraduate and postgraduatecourses in various subjects of Arts, Commerce, and Sciencestreams, the college, in tune with the changing needs ofhigher education, has introduced courses like B.B.A.,B.C.A., Environmental Sciences and Water Management,and training courses in dry farming, cultivation of aromaticand medicinal plants, mushroom, lac cultivation, vermicomposting, sericulture and soil water analysis. The collegeruns three distance education centers such as IGNOU, NSOU,and MANUU. In 2010, the college was declared a “Centrewith Potential for Excellence” by the UGC. In 2011, itreceived Rs. 50,000 as seed money for the development ofBasic Scientific Research (BSR). In 2012, the UGCintroduced three career-oriented courses in FunctionalEnglish, Mobile Repairing, and Vermicomposting, whichwere run successfully by the college for three years. Thecollege has been re-accredited (cycle 2) by the NAAC witha grade of B+ in 2020. We are confident that, with honest anddiligent effort, we will scale greater heights in the future.
Vision
The vision of Banwarilal Bhalotia College is to provide comprehensive education for understanding human values, professionalism, social responsibilities, and political awareness and to inculcate a scientific state of mind in all sections of students, including scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, other backward communities, economically challenged students, and religious minorities, with special focus on female students.
